Balkan Dialect Materials

For researchers working on issues of diachronic and areal linguistics, it is often helpful to consult data taken from dialects rather than from standardized language varieties. However, such data is not always easily accessible. For this reason, I have been gradually compiling electronic adaptations of sources that I have consulted while working on my own research. This project has two aspects: (1) taking notes in English of dialect descriptions in non-major scholarly languages in order to bring the data to the attention of a wider audience, and (2) the compilation of texts, etc., in more easily accessible and searchable electronic formats.

Some samples are given below. This is a work in progress – feel free to contact me (adombrow <at> uchicago <dot> edu) for fuller materials. Also, please note that the texts are only in plaintext. To some extent, this reflects my interest in phonology, as barebones plaintext can be leveraged for phonology much more productively than they can be for, e.g., syntax, for which more comprehensive markup would be ideal. Interested parties are invited to build upon these sources.
